We got stuff and you do too!
There’s no way getting around the fact that you are going to need to carry stuff. Sure there should be less stuff with an RV lifestyle but there’s still going to be some stuff.
We heard good things about the Stromberg Carlson model CC-255 trailer tray and had it installed while at Little Home on the Road in Haslett, TX. While we really like the hitch tray we hadn’t decided what kind of covered storage box would work best for us. Stromberg Carlson makes a ‘Generator Box’ (model # CC-200) that is designed to fit inside the raised edges (when the tray is mounted right side up) of the trapezoid-shaped trailer tray.
The box has built-in access grommets and ventilation louvers required when running a generator. It also features a hatch that opens to give full front access to the generator inside. It looks like a rugged, well designed box – just not right for us. At this point we do not see us carrying a generator full time on our trailer hitch. Without that requirement, our search for a more suitable storage box turned to another solution. While down at LHOTR we asked them to install the tray upside down; so that the flat surface was on top. Since we weren’t going to get a CC-200 box, there was no need to restrict our future storage box choice to the confines of the raised edges of the tray. Other factors in our decision? The CC-200 would have been over $500 – perhaps a fair price if we made use of the features of the box but we would not. We went another way. More on that later – we still haven’t gotten out of Texas!
